Task 6 - Magazine Advert 2

This is a magazine advert for the Kings Of Leon's album 'Only By The Night'. This advert is effective because it partially shows all four members of the band in a combined image. This unique style of image draws the consumers attention and increases their interest in the band.

  • The text in this advert surrounds the album cover image so as to make it the main focus. Also, the font used is a simple block font so that it is easy for the consumer to read and looks good.
  • The colour scheme for this advert is dark with a colour scheme of Black, Green and White. This is reflected in the album cover where the image appears to have been taken by a night vision camera to fit in with the dark colours.
  • Three of the artists songs are mentioned in this advert so that the consumer is interested in buying the album.

Task 6 - Magazine Advert 1

In this magazine advert for Jay Z's album 'The Blueprint 3', the most obvious thing is the colour scheme which is very basic and simplistic but also very aesthetically pleasing so as to attract the consumer.
  • All of the text in this advert is around the outside so that the main focus is the album cover picture. Also, because the background is mostly white, the text is very visible and makes it easier for the consumer to read.
  • The simple white, black and red colour scheme is very simple but also reflects the record labels own colour scheme.
  • A simple block font is used for the artists name so that it stands out and isn't over exaggerated.
  • Two of the artists well known songs are mentioned so that the consumers know what to expect from the rest of the album.

Task 5 - Genre Research

I have researched into the artist Hoodie Allen to help me create my own music video for my coursework. This will help me as I will be able to research the different styles, camera angles, shots etc to use in my own video. Hoodie Allen is generally involved in a hip-hop style with some rap included. Therefore I have reasearched both of these specific genres into how they create their own style.
I searched for hip-hop artistsand discovered a lot of artists alongside Hoodie Allen that include both hip-hop and rap into their music.
For example - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft Wanz - Thrift Shop.

This music video interprets a fun and exciting environment in which the artists are singing and acting in throughout the video.

Like Hoodie Allens music video for 'Fame is for A*****es', both videos use a natural environment (Hoodie in a high school and Macklemore in a Thrift Shop).
I will also include the idea of a natural environment for my loaction to make it seem realistic and a regular place.

Research Task 3 - Video

Hoodie Allen - No Interruption

For my video analysis, I have chosen Hoodie Allen's music video for his song 'No Interruption' which is featured on his 'All American' album and therefore fits in with the marketing package theme.

  • The use of natural lighting throughout the video gives it a very gritty/real quality which fits in with Hoodie's style and is in keeping with the sense of reality that Hoodie tries to promote.
  • This video is mainly located in a rundown warehouse car park which again creates a real quality which is contrasted by the strange things happening in the video. When the car begins drifting in the car park, it is clear that this video is not as serious as the location makes it seem.
  • There are a variety of shots used in this video to show the different things that are happening. The most creative shot used in this video is the close up of Hoodie and the two women in the back of the car as it is driven aggressively around the car park. This shot is effective because it shows Hoodie as he lip syncs while being thrown around in the back seat.
  • Hoodie is lip syncing throughout the entire video but not every shot includes him. However when he is shown to be lip syncing, it is in time with the song.
  • Hoodie is the main focus of the video, not just because he is the artist but because the director has tried to base a strange short story around him.
  • The constant use of close up steady shots gives the video a structured feeling and shows each person as a different character.

Task 4 - Preliminary Video

The final edit of the preliminary task.
There were a few flaws in the editing process and the lip syncing which made a few shots seem out of time. However, overall I think that the task was successful. Teamwork between myself and Ellie was very good when it came to the creation of the storyboard and the editing of the video, unfortunately, the other member of our group did very little outside of being the main focus in the video.

Research Task 3 - Poster

The poster for Hoodie Allen's album 'All American' fits into the same theme as the digipak with the American flag so that the idea of patriotism is put across to the audience. In the poster, Hoodie's iconic 'HA' symbol is used at the bottom, it displays the colours and pattern of the American flag and therefore reflects the American theme/patriotism.
  •  The American colour scheme promotes Hoodie's patriotism and the name of the album.

Research Task 3 - Digipak

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 15.32.12

This is the digipak for Hoodie Allen's album 'All American'. I like this digipak because it is simple and contains clear shots of the artist. The general colour scheme is very obvious and represents the American flag which relates to the album title. In my digipak I would like to do something similar to this, relating to the album title and keeping the them similar throughout all parts of the marketing package. The CD also represents the American flag and is a unique take on the colour scheme, it is very aesthetically pleasing and suits the theme. I also like the double exposure imagery on the track list as this is an effective idea for a digipak.
  • As Hoodie is a slightly controversial artist, edgy and dark images would be suitable for the digipak. Street photography and clothing fit in with Hoodie's style.
  • The American flag is a necessity for this digipak due to the name of the album and the theme of some of the songs.

Preliminary Task Update

Our initial choice of video was the High School Musical 2 song 'What Time Is It?', however due to a lack of willing actors and a faulty camera, we decided to change to a song featuring less people. Therefore we chose 'Knock you down' - Keri Hilson ft. Kanye West and Ne-Yo.
